Grand National Controversy
Despite the fact that many people — actually, millions of fans — love to enjoy the Grand National, there are controversies surrounding the event. Issues such as animal protections and fatalities are haunting the Grand National. Throughout the 162 years of this event’s history, there are several controversies indeed. We are going to take a look at some of them in this article.
The Grand National has been a target for animal rights group for years now. They have been protesting about the event putting horses in harms’ way. They do have a point, since this hunt is indeed rough; that’s what makes the event superbly interesting and challenging in the first place. There are a total amount of 58 fatalities throughout the 162 years of this event. Frankly speaking, the number may not be that concerning when compared to other more dangerous sporting events.
The protesters’ claim that the event is what they call “brings shame on Britain as a nation of animal lovers” culminates in 2000 Grand National and causes law enforcement officers to be alarmed. After the 1997 IRA bomb threat against the Grand National, this event’s security and precautionary measures had been quite tight as well.
We all hope that the 2010 can be held without problems. No one wants brutal and offensive protests; not in Britain where peace is something we value very much. The controversies are still there, and will probably still be there for years to come; it is these controversies that make the event that much more exciting.
